Freeman Girls Varsity soccer has started the year off with a bang, collecting 3 wins against competitive teams in the first 3 weeks of their season.
The Rebels first beat Atlee 4-1, dominating possession early. Scorers included Lauren Bruns (11), Karson Girvin (10), and 2 from Shannon Galt (12). Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Hargrove, along with her strong back line, held off a tenacious attacking team to only let in 1 goal.
Next on the schedule was Glen Allen, a team Freeman was again able to control early. Hargrove held a clean sheet, with Galt (12) scoring 1 and Bruns (11) scoring 2 to lead the team to victory 3-0.
Freeman’s last game saw a struggle with an organized 2A opponent, Maggie Walker. The Times Dispatch ranked the Green Dragons only one spot below the Rebels in their “Teams to Watch,” and both teams put up a fight to show dominance. The game remained scoreless until the very end, with Hargrove (9) coming up big with saves and Freeman’s offense working hard. With 2 minutes left, Juliana McKean (11) played Bruns (11) in behind the defense, who fired a shot in the corner to put the Rebels up 1-0
The Rebels have put up a strong showing so far in a season where they are predicted to be a top competitor in the 5A region, with Hargrove (9) only conceding 1 goal and the Rebels scoring a total of 8 goals in a few games. Next Thursday, Freeman faces Glen Allen again at home, aiming to defend their victory.
